Pumpkin ale entry question

Postby siwelwerd » Wed Feb 03, 2010 9:06 pm

I have a Pumpkin Ale I want to submit to a competition. The BJCP guidelines for category 21 sayeth:

THE ENTRANT MUST SPECIFY THE UNDERLYING BEER STYLE AS WELL AS THE TYPE OF SPICES, HERBS, OR VEGETABLES USED. IF THIS BEER IS BASED ON A CLASSIC STYLE (E.G., BLONDE ALE) THEN THE SPECIFIC STYLE MUST BE SPECIFIED. CLASSIC STYLES DO NOT HAVE TO BE CITED (E.G., “PORTER” OR “WHEAT ALE” IS ACCEPTABLE). THE TYPE OF SPICES, HERBS, OR VEGETABLES MUST ALWAYS BE SPECIFIED.

Does this mean I should write "Pumpkin Ale" for special ingredients, or "Pumpkin English Pale Ale with Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, and Allspice"?

I think writing just "Pumpkin Ale" is your best bet. once you start labeling every ingredient, judges look for every ingredient. that means if they can't find ginger, you may get docked some points.

You must declare the beer style, "English Pale Ale" Cat 8C. If it doesn't have pumpkin in it, don't say pumpkin, then list your spices or say pumpkin pie spices.

The guidelines specifically say you do not have to cite a classic style.

So it sounds like "English Pale Ale with Pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices" is the way to go then. Thanks guys!

You are right Augie, the 8C is not nescessary. Doesn't hurt. But you must say at least English Pale Ale.

Think about it this way, anything you put on there the judges will look for.
