Re-using yeast

Postby l1chris » Mon Jan 16, 2012 5:11 pm

How many times, in theory, should the same lager yeast be re-pitched before having to worry about mutations and off-flavors? I thought I heard that lager yeasts shouldn't go more than 2 batches. Any thoughts?

It might matter which lager yeast. My Wyeast Hella Bock yeast made the best beer in the third go around (I did not try 4). Similarly my second Danish Pilsner was better than the first

For anyone interested, I emailed white labs and got a reply the next day saying typically 3-6 generations is ok for the average lager strain before worrying about mutations. Your results may vary. So now, how many generations is ideal for an ale yeast strain? Guess I should have asked that too...

I know of a local brewery that uses white labs Kolsch ale for 13 batches, when they buy a new batch it cost 500$.
