British malts

Postby l1chris » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:37 pm

I need to order a sack of British pale ale malt from Kent and I see that he offers several different types. Does anyone have any info (good or bad) or any experience using any of these malts? I know it will be used for a Brown Porter and probably an old ale at some point. The malts he offers are:
BAIRDS MALT- UK Maris Otter
Pale Ale

THOMAS FAWCETT- UK
Maris Otter Pale Ale (floor malted)
Golden Promise Pale Ale
Halcyon Pale Ale
Optic Pale Ale
Pearl Pale Ale
(I'll admit, I've never even heard of some of these...)

I'm a big fan of the floor malted, so I get Thomas Faucet Maris Otter quite a bit.

I exclusively use Crisp Maris Otter. Why? Because I randomly selected it from the available English malts Kent sells, and really liked the results :D

I chose mine based on traditions, liked the results have looked no further. Drew and I seem to be stuck in a rut, a good rut, but a rut none the less. And no, I'm not going to explore the non-floor malted malts. Why argue with success.

floor malted MO will give you a musty/earthy character, that you won't get from the non-floor malted type. Golden Promise is a Scottish malt which will be like MO/British 2row, but be sweeter. You'd use it when making a traditional Scottish beer.

I've used all different types of MO and GP, all have been good. I like the floor malted MO the best, regardless of who makes it. Crisp is good, but I've also enjoyed the results from Thomas Fawcet and Warminster

Bob, ceiling malt, really? If you find a source let me know and I'll split a bag with you.

I think ceiling malted is only available south of the equator. :D
