No partridge!

Postby Witch Doctor Dale » Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:31 pm

But I am getting pear trees. Not sure if many of you remember my Perry from two years ago, or the Perry Jack from last year, but we are cloning the pear tree from whence they came! OK, maybe not cloning....but grafting the tree to semi-dwarf rootstock. Seems this 100+ year old pear tree in SW Iowa is destined to be cut down by the new oners. My mother, an experienced "grafter" is going to graft ten trees, 5 will stay in Iowa, 5 are coming down to me plus a few "root suckers" or seedlings from the tree. Its apperently self fertile (no other pear trees for several blocks), produces abundently, and are great eating pears, not to mention great common perry pears. I'm going to get a couple extra, if someone wants one, let me know.

I would be interested in a pear tree but I am not familiar with Root suckers or grafting. In simple terms can I just dig a hole and stick the tree in the hole and wait a few year to get pears? I promise to ferment the pears that grow.

I'll get you a grafted rootstock. Its a semi dwarfing which with pruning, will keep the tree around 15 feet. And that's all you do, dig a hole, plant and water and in three years start picking pears in late August.
