Tapatalk Plugin and Mobile App

Postby timothy » Thu Sep 25, 2014 1:19 pm

Since it's available for phpBB, I would like to request that we install the Tapatalk plugin for our forum, allowing a user friendly and convenient way to use the forum on a mobile device by using the free Tapatalk app. For the forums that I visit regularly that have this plugin installed, my usage is more frequent than the forums I have to log on to the computer for. I anticipate that forum usage would increase, at least slightly, upon installation of this plugin, especially considering the number of us that have transitioned to our smart phones and tablets for the bulk of our casual internet usage. Once you use this app on your mobile device for the first time, you'll quickly appreciate the clean interface and streamlined mobile experience. Wow, I sound like a rep for this company or something. Just check it out, it's nice.

That sounds like a great idea to me. I'm all for anything which makes is easier/more likely for members to be active on the forums. It seems like a woefully under-used resource to me, especially considering how many knowledgeable members we have.

Cheers!

This has been suggested previously. We were to get an update to the website & forum and with the new update the forum was going to be mobile accessible. It's being looked into.

Thanks Tim.

I look forward to those updates, I just know that they have been a long-time coming, so it may be a while longer before we see the hard work of the web folks come to fruition. As a former web-designer, I understand that these things take time, especially when done on a pro-bono basis, so I'm not complaining.

However, as one last push, it appears that installation of this plugin would be extremely minimal, even if the new forum will provide some improvements for mobile users. In my experience, I find this streamlined app really hard to beat, even if the site and forum are updated in the future. I think it's worth mentioning that a few of our contemporaries (STL Hops and Garage Brewers...to name a few) have already installed this plugin on their sites and I frequently take advantage of that feature, often to the detriment of my own club's forum.

Cheers

Any updates on this front? I'd still love to see the plugin installed.

At the last meeting we were discussing how most members do not use the forums. I think, if we could use tapatalk plugin we would see an increase in usage on the forum. GBS and STL Hops both use tapatalk an seem to have great success.

It would be great to have the tapatalk option. I agree, it would probably increase the activity on this forum.

I'd be for looking into it. Any volunteers to take the lead?

I've never done anything like this, but I'm always up to learning new things.

Let me see what the install and config is like.

Who are our web admins? This would need to be done in collaboration with them.

A couple of questions - ads or no ads. Solutions with no ads typically are a paid service. We'll likely need to publish to the apple store and android store. Has anyone done that before?

Dan, you want to work together on this?

Mike,

What information do you think would be required in order to make a decision on whether this is something the officers would agree to, besides cost?

Which version of phpBB are we using? I couldn't find it.

thanks,
Paul

We are using phpbb3, version 3.0.10.

I think cost would be something we would need to know in order to make a decision, but also, just what the effort is in not only installing it, but also maintaining it.

Agreed. On going maintenance efforts/costs are a consideration.

For the sake of having a reference, what are the current costs of the club website? Feel free to PM me if you prefer.
