How should the club spend money?

Postby Kally » Tue Sep 06, 2011 3:09 pm

What are your priorities for club funds?
How should the club spend $3k-$5k over the next year?

equipment?
rental spaces?
beer?
charity?
brewery collaboration?
website improvements?
tip the brewmaster?

begin.

I should add BJCP cert costs. The club could buy all the example beer and exam fees for BJCP certifications.

we have been operating as too good of a homebrew engine and we need to shed capital. I can go into details at the next meeting.
The other option is to stop collecting dues - though, that has it's own legal implications as well and isn't a complete solution.

1. We should buy better food. Lets give Drew a little more to spend for each meeting.

2. We should give MO Bev. something in return for what they have done for us. This would help my conscience a little when I have to pee after a meeting and notice that many before me have missed the toilet. Those guys have been great to us and have helped put us in that position (having money not peeing on the floor). Maybe we should throw them a BBQ or something...

3. Tasting glasses, commerative ones for each year you pay your yearly dues. If you join for a year, you get a glass. Then you can bring it to the meetings.

Why? It makes no sense to even discuss what to spend money on until the question of why to spend it is answered.

Regarding the food Robert, my choices are more based on what is convenient to buy and serve given the complete lack of a kitchen in the meeting area than on what is cheap. I do like the catering idea though, that sure seems like less work for me.

We are really putting the cart before the horse here.

Until we get a reason for why this is important, it should be tabled.

If you don't want to discuss it here, then send an email to all of those folks who are active members. The secretary sends out an letter monthly. That seems to work.

How about catering the Holiday Party? I know in the past we have had Tom Coghil from Iron Barley supply the main dish and a side or two, but what about abandoning the pot luck style on the food. Get the appetizers, main dish, sides, kids food, and deserts all catered and delivered, we just set up and clean up. It might add a little more "Special" to the Holiday party more it from just a party to banquet?

Note - I am not trying to say the food in the past has been lacking in the least, I am just suggesting a way to spend money that would benefit the members.

Why does the club need to spend this money? If we all agree on the fact that the club needs to spend, THEN we can decide on what. It really seems like someone is going to have a killer brewery at their house, an awesome set of beer dispensing coolers and a firken all on the club dime.
Am I going to want to use the club brewery at my house? Probably not. I would have to learn all about it and adapt my system to that brewery and when the brew is all over I might have the hang of it only to not use it again for a year when it's my turn again. Plus I'm not sure I would want to trust both everyone else's cleaning and sanitation practices and my own cleanliness for the next guy's brew.
This elaborate brew system and needing to spend money doesn't really sound like a necessity.
I think the best thing to do IF we need to shed money is decide first the things we think the club could improve on and put money toward that if possible. Last I checked, we aren't hurting for members so doing more brew demos to attract potential members may not be a high priority.

I've mentioned to Drew in the past that he is free to spend more on food as needed. However, the lack of kitchen facilities severely limits the selection of food we can have.

On Tap: IPA, Kolsch, Dusseldorf Alt, APA
Waiting their turn: Belgian Blonde

Ready to serve at Heritage Festival: IPA, Kolsch, Dusseldorf Alt

CATER the meetings!
Only kidding.....I do like Ted's idea of an audit and if Kally is right then the club pays for it, but if Kally is fear mongering for whatever reasons, then he pay for it. What the heck is the club going to do with a firkin?

Too bad we didn't make a motion to cater October's meeting from some nice German restaurant.

Craps.
