Galena hops

Postby bacillus » Fri Apr 15, 2011 4:34 pm

Having a little local homebrew-off with some buddies built around the use of galena's only. I have not used them much so am asking those that have used them a lot for a decent recipe. What style do they work best with?
There is no style limitations and the only thing that has to be consistent is the hops. I was thinking perhaps of a steam beer, any thoughts?

As always, thanks for the input! Oh and for those that read and responded to my Belgian Wit Mishap post, I'll remember to add everything to the boil this time

I've never brewed with Galena but from what I've read it's mostly used as a bittering hop. Substitutes are Chinook and Eroica so I would guess the bitterness is on the harsh side.

I'd go light on the 60 min addition and heavier on the late additions if you really want to get the most aroma and flavor out of the hop.

I think a steam beer would probably work well or a pale ale just to get familiar with them.

I think a steam beer would be good...although they aren't like Northern Brewer (which is what Anchor uses).

I think this would turn out to be quite tasty with Galena in there...save me a bottle!! :D

So it's been awhile since I was on the board and thank you for the replies to my question. Next question: Does anyone have a decent Steam recipe?

I just made this one and it tasted pretty damned good as I was transferring it after fermentation/before carbonation:

I fermented it for 9 days @ 58 then bumped it up to 60-62 for 5 days.
It is clearing in the secondary now at 45 degrees.
